DOUBLE EYELID RECOVERY

12-Month
Honest Diary

The 14-day mark is the social-presentability threshold, not the final-result threshold. Why the week-3 panic is normal.

Quick Answer

Double eyelid recovery is 6–12 months to final result. Non-incisional: 6–8 weeks. Partial: 3–6 months. Incisional: 12 months. Week-3 panic posts in forums are normal — the crease appears high during the inflammatory phase. Wait until week 8 before drawing conclusions; do not pursue revision before 6 months.

Why a 12-Month Timeline?

Most clinic websites describe double eyelid recovery in terms of "10–14 days." This is dangerously misleading. The 14-day mark is the social-presentability threshold, not the final-result threshold. Many patients reach week 3, see asymmetric and high-looking eyelids, and panic — convinced their surgery has failed.

It has not. The week-3 appearance is the normal inflammatory phase. Final result emerges at 6–12 months — sometimes longer for incisional cases.

NON-INCISIONAL

Buried Suture Recovery

Days 1–3

Mild swelling at upper lid. No bandage required. Three to five micro-puncture sites visible, no stitches to remove. Cold compresses for first 48 hours.

Days 4–7

Swelling subsides rapidly. Light eye makeup (lower lid only) acceptable from day 5. Most patients return to social activities by day 7.

Weeks 2–6

Crease softens. Final crease height settles by week 6 for most cases. Asymmetry typically resolves in this window.

Months 2–12

Crease remains stable. Longevity 5–7 years on average; varies by lid thickness and eye-rubbing habits.

Total recovery to final result: 6–8 weeks for non-incisional cases.

INCISIONAL

The Complete 12-Month Diary

Phase 1 · Days 1–7 (Acute)

Significant swelling, mild bruising. Eyes may be partially swollen "shut" — normal, resolves within 5–7 days. Stitches removed at day 5. Light lower-lid makeup acceptable from day 5.

Phase 2 · Days 8–14 (Resolution)

Bruising completes color cycle and fades. Swelling drops by 60–70%. Crease at this stage looks high and obvious. Most international patients fly home in this window.

Phase 3 · Weeks 2–6 (Asymmetry Phase)

This is the phase most often misunderstood. Crease remains higher than final result. Asymmetry common. Internet forums fill with "panic" posts at week 3–4 — but the surgery has not failed. This is the inflammatory phase. Wait until at least week 8 before drawing conclusions.

Phase 4 · Months 2–6 (Settling)

Around month 2, most patients first feel "settled." Asymmetry typically resolves by month 3–4. Heavy eye makeup, false lashes, lash extensions all acceptable from month 2.

Phase 5 · Months 6–12 (Final Result)

Final crease height settled. Fold reads as natural — not "operated." Scar fades to nearly invisible at conversational distance.

Total recovery to final result: 12 months for incisional — sometimes 9 months for younger patients with good tissue elasticity.

COMMON QUESTIONS DURING RECOVERY

Why Your Eyes Look "Wrong" at Week 3

"My right eye is more swollen than my left at week 3. Is something wrong?"

No. Asymmetric swelling between the two eyes is normal during weeks 2–6. The swelling resolves at slightly different rates on each side. By month 3, most asymmetry has resolved.

"I see a small ridge or thick band along the crease at week 4. Is this a scar problem?"

No. The pretarsal tissue thickens during the inflammatory phase and produces a slight ridge along the crease line. The ridge softens over months 2–6.

"My crease looks different from the celebrity photo I brought to consultation. Did the surgeon do something wrong?"

Comparison should be deferred to month 6 minimum, ideally month 12. A celebrity photo is a fully settled, professionally lit image. Your week-3 lid is none of these things.
