A neck lift is incisional surgery that tightens the loosened tissue of the neck and removes excess skin, restoring the line between the jaw and the neck. At ETONNE in Gangnam, Seoul, it is done on its own — about 1.5 hours under sleep anesthesia, same-day discharge, drain out by day 3, stitches out at about day 10 — or together with a deep plane facelift when the face and neck are examined and found to need lifting together.
The tissue of the lower face and the neck is continuous. When the cheeks and jowls descend, the skin and the underlying layer of the neck loosen with them: vertical bands show, skin gathers under the chin, and the jawline loses its edge. Treating the face alone can leave that change behind, and treating the neck alone can leave the face above it unchanged.
ETONNE therefore analyzes the skin condition of the face and the neck from several angles before any lifting plan is made. Depending on how far the neck has loosened, the neck lift is planned together with a deep plane facelift — one continuous lift from cheek to neck — or, when the sagging is confined to the neck and jawline, as a lift of the neck itself: about 1.5 hours under sleep anesthesia, with no hospitalization.
At ETONNE (Gangnam-daero, by Nonhyeon Station), the surgery is performed by board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Cho Jeongmok, Dr. Kim Harkyoung, Dr. Kim Jaegon, and Dr. Koo Heetae. The surgeon you consult with performs your operation from incision to closure, and a board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Jung Eunjin, is present for every general anesthesia case.
CANDIDATES
When wrinkles and laxity of the neck are a concern — on their own, or along with sagging of the face.
When the angle between the jaw and the neck has softened and the jawline no longer reads clearly from the side.
ETONNE's approach to the jawline and neck runs from non-invasive treatments through non-incisional elastic thread lifting to incisional surgery. The neck lift is the incisional step, chosen when the loosening is significant.
When the cheeks and jowls have also descended, the neck is treated as part of a deep plane facelift rather than on its own.
THE SURGERY
PRICING
The fee depends on whether the neck is lifted together with a deep plane facelift or on its own, and on the anesthesia used. For that reason we do not publish a figure here; you receive an individual quote after the consultation. International patients book directly with the clinic.
Send a few photos — a side view of the neck helps — and your questions; the coordinator replies in English and arranges a consultation with the surgeon. For how to plan a surgery trip to Seoul, see International Patients.
RECOVERY
Surgery day
About 1.5 hours of surgery under sleep anesthesia. You go back to your hotel the same day with a small drain in place.
Day 1
A hair wash at the clinic is recommended. Bruising and swelling are expected.
Days 1–3
The drain is removed at the clinic at about day 3, as the wound allows — the first of the two follow-up visits. Your travel schedule is arranged with the coordinator when you book.
Day 10
Stitches come out and your surgeon checks your recovery; the date is postponed a few days if the wound needs more time — the second follow-up visit.
Combined with a facelift
When the neck is lifted with a deep plane facelift, the neck stitches come out at the same visit as the facelift stitches (about day 7–10) and the stay is about 12–14 days.
Back home
Swelling and bruising subside over the following weeks; how quickly varies from person to person. If pain or bruising increases suddenly after you get home, contact the clinic at once.
For what a facelift recovery feels like week by week, see Facelift Recovery Timeline.
BEFORE YOU DECIDE
Because this is incisional surgery, scars remain along the incision lines, and how the scars settle depends on your skin condition and the healing process. Bruising and swelling are expected after surgery. A hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin) can occur: if pain or bruising increases suddenly after surgery, you need to be examined at once. When the neck lift is combined with a deep plane facelift, the risks of that surgery also apply.
Please tell us at your pre-surgery consultation about any medications you take, including blood thinners such as anticoagulants, as well as any medical conditions and whether you smoke. During recovery, please avoid alcohol and smoking and attend follow-up visits as scheduled.
Please make your decision after you have been fully informed of the risks and of alternative options. Results and recovery vary from person to person.
FAQ
ETONNE's deep plane facelift is planned after analyzing the condition of the skin on both the face and the neck. Depending on the degree of neck wrinkles and laxity, a neck lift may be planned together with it. Whether to combine them is decided at the consultation after an examination.
Yes, when the sagging is confined to the neck and the jawline. On its own, a neck lift takes about 1.5 hours under sleep anesthesia, with no hospitalization. Whether a lift of the neck alone is appropriate for you is decided at the consultation after an examination.
On its own, about 1.5 hours under sleep anesthesia, and you go home the same day. Combined with a deep plane facelift, it is done as part of that operation under general anesthesia or sleep anesthesia, and you either go home the same day or stay about one day.
For a neck lift on its own, the drain comes out at about day 3 and the stitches at about day 10, over two follow-up visits. Your travel schedule, including when you can fly home, is arranged with the coordinator when you book. For the combined face and neck lift, the neck stitches come out at the same visit as the facelift stitches, about 7–10 days after surgery. How quickly swelling and bruising subside varies from person to person.
Yes. The incisions run around the earlobe and behind the ear, with an incision under the chin when the neck muscle needs direct repair, so scars remain along those lines. How much they fade varies from person to person depending on skin condition and healing.
